Dreams

Dreams (1990) is a magical realist anthology film of eight vignettes written and directed by Akira Kurosawa.
Inspired by recurring dreams from Kurosawa’s own life, the film explores the liminal space between dreams and waking reality.
In one of its most memorable sequences, an art student enters the world of Vincent van Gogh and wanders through his paintings as though they were living landscapes.
Van Gogh is a fitting muse for this film. He famously said, “I dream my painting, and then I paint my dream.”
Kurosawa transforms that idea into cinema.
Each vignette gives form to one of his dreams, while reflecting on life, mortality, and the hidden dimensions of human experience.
